Fat Cats Report, June 2022
Dear Fat Cats,
When I set up the Fat Cats Club back in April, I imagined that if anyone sent any money at all, it would come in the form of $5 monthly subscriptions. I would then pick one organization every month or so and send them a small contribution.
But you surprised me. Instead, every single new member signed up for a year, apparently on the questionable assumption that I would be able to keep up the newsletter for at least that long! In mid April, flush with cash, I sent out two $300.00 contributions, one to Rocky Mountain Institute and the other to Rainforest Trust.
The Fat Cats are not quite so flush this time (balance of 524.42) but we have plenty to make another $300 contribution, this time to Solar Sister.
Solar Sister works primarily in rural sub Saharan Africa, their goal being to set up local women in green energy businesses. Each new entrepreneur gets a year of classes and mentoring in business practices and small scale solar installations, some seed money to start her business, and follow-up business counseling and auditing. Their projects bring electrical power to areas with nonexistent or unreliable grid infrastructure and reduce the use of expensive and polluting fuel generators.
Numerous studies have shown that enabling women entrepreneurs can be a powerful money multiplier in rural third world areas suffering from endemic poverty. These are often the same areas that are already facing the worst effects of climate change, with the least resources for mitigation. Solar Sister has earned a 95 rating from Charity Navigator, about as high as they get.
I hope some of you Fat Cats will consider making an addition contribution to this worthy organization — Make a Contribution
